New Labour

Web site number 11

Yes to compassion; yes to more caring.

Hi! You’re on line to the Capital of the Information Highway Our Leader’s Web site. And he has just two words to say to you from Scotland where he is campaigning in the referendum: YES,YES!!

But, you know, there’s a more serious side. You probably remember how, in the General Election, the Tories tried to belittle the Scottish parliament by saying it was no more important than an English parish Council. Your leader knows that these things are not just about politics – they are about how people feel inside. And that is why he has come to Scotland to give them all a very special hug.

As you all know, he spent Sunday with the Queen, discussing the implications of a very tragic week. He allowed viewers of Breakfast with Frost to share some of his thoughts, but now he is going to let you, the geeks on line to Web site number 11, learn a little bit more.

You see, the Queen said she was very, very sad about what happened in Paris, but she could not quite see why it meant that there had to be fundamental changes in a constitutional monarchy that had been evolving steadily since the reign of William and Mary. She said that she and her family would do everything possible to cherish the Princess’s memory, but they did not see what, precisely, in political terms, had changed.

That was when Our leader had to tell the Queen straight – very caringly, and tenderly – that this country had moved, in just six short days, to being a new sort of monarchy. Sure, the old monarchs, - Her Majesty herself – were still around. But what those crowds, who came in their millions to the streets of London, really wanted was a People’s Leadership. Someone young, caring, compassionate. Someone who led with the heart. Someone very like Our Leader.

The Queen then said to Our Leader that she was afraid of certain unscrupulous elements in liberal-republican circles cynically using this sad week as an excuse for furthering their political ends. She said there was very little evidence that the crowds – who were, after all, turning out for a Royal funeral, had done so because they were pining for a Bill of Rights, or because they had read newspapers written by Mr Hurron or by Mr Rusbridger.

Our Leader had to say to Elizabeth. Look. You know. You are really out of touch here. We really have moved on, into a different political climate here. We are probably moving on to a completely new Era of Compassion, one which is so compassionate that it does not make sense to have confrontational politics in Westminster with "parties" and " oppositions". We’ll leave that to the regional assemblies. That’s what "Yes, Yes" will mean on Thursday, incidentally. Yes to more compassion, Yes to more caring..

Our Leader told the Queen that Parliaments themselves just like Old Style Monarchies, diminished in importance last week. The people don’t understand all the flummery of ritual, of MPs calling themselves the Honourable Member for this or that, any more than they want a House of Lords.

And Our Leader was able to articulate the yearning of those millions of people who could only "say it with flowers". And it was this. Forget Labour, Tory, SNP whatever. We want a People’s leader. A leader who isn’t afraid to let emotion come into his voice. Who isn’t afraid to let them know he is hurting inside. And, yes, even let a tear show in his eye. This is the leader we want isn’t it? Yes,Yes!

It seemed to Our Leader, as he went to tell the Queen, that the Princess had led her life like a candle in the wind. But he was determined, absolutely determined to keep that flame alive. That was why after the next General Election, he was considering, as a mark of respect, abolishing the old-style macho confrontational politics altogether and governing with a united leadership.

Because, Our Leader did not just have himself to consider. There was the vitally important task of protecting the privacy of the children, while preparing them for the responsibility of what lay ahead. When the time came for Euan to succeed to the New Leadership for a New Century, we all wanted him to have learnt from his father.

There are lessons to be learnt in the long task of seizing absolute power. And the most absolute power of all is, Love. Our Leader loves everyone and especially those on the margins, to bits. And this torch is something he will always carry.
